WHITE PASS SCHOOL DISTRICT
BOND ELECTION FACT SHEET
BALLOT PROPOSAL FOR FEBRUARY 19, 2008
WHY IS A BOND NEEDED?
The main infrastructure of the Jr./Sr. High School was built in 1953. The “New Gym” and the Elementary school were added in the mid 1960’s. The existing condition of school facilities and the institution of new educational programs require that the district construct a new Jr./Sr. High School to replace the existing school, renovate and expand the elementary school and to make health and safety improvements. Public schools in the State of Washington use bonds for construction or renovation of buildings.
WHAT WILL THE BOND PROVIDE?
White Pass Jr/Sr High School * Construction of a new building |
White Pass Elementary School * Renovation of existing building |
HOW MUCH WILL THE BOND COST?
The total cost to local taxpayers would be $18,500,000 which includes construction management and the cost of issuance for bonds. This equates to approximately $2.36 per $1000 of assessed valuation. The total project will cost $23,480,500 with the state matching amount to be $4,980,500. Bond rates are still relatively low. If passed, this would be a twenty year bond.
Sample Residence Annual Tax Increase Monthly Tax Increase
$100,000 $236.00 $19.66
$150,000 $354.00 $29.50
$200,000 $472.00 $39.33
The simple majority passed into law in December of 2007 is for levies only. That means that a 60% supermajority is still required to pass this bond election. If successful, the entire project is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of the 2010 school year.
